That’s in their revenue accounts, of course.
This suggestion is being passed around via email, and it sure sounds good to me:
How about if we make Inauguration Day, Thursday, January 20th, 2005 “Not One Damn Dime Day” in America.
On “Not One Damn Dime Day” those who oppose what is happening in our name in Iraq can speak up with a 24-hour national boycott of all forms of consumer spending.
During “Not One Damn Dime Day” let’s not spend money. Not one damn dime for gasoline. Not one damn dime for necessities or for impulse purchases. Not one damn dime for 24 hours. On “Not One Damn Dime Day,” boycott Wal-Mart, Kmart, Target…
Don’t go to the mall or the local convenience store. Don’t buy any fast food (or any groceries at all for that matter). For 24 hours, let’s do what we can to keep our money where our mouths are. If the slump in spending is big enough to notice, maybe we can get their attention.
“Not One Damn Dime Day” is to remind those in power that they work for the people of the United States of America, not for the international corporations and K Street lobbyists and richer-than-god neocons who represent the corporations that funnel cash into corrupting our American political system.
There’s no rally to attend. No marching to do. No left or right wing agenda to rant about. On “Not One Damn Dime Day” you take action by doing nothing.
You open your mouth by keeping your wallet closed.
For 24 hours, nothing gets spent, not one damn dime, to remind our religious leaders and our politicians of their moral responsibility to end the war in Iraq and give America back to the people.
NOT ONE DAMN DIME on Inaguration Day. Pass the word.
Well, dang — I like this idea. Course, the word would need to spread like wildfire to get enough people to participate for it to matter…but imagine seeing a news report on World News Tonight — “retailers report an enormous and strange dip in revenue for 24 hours…”
It’d be glorious.
I like it. Is this a Kalilily original, or is there a larger organizational push for it out there that we could also link?
Actually, I edited a version of an email forwarded to me by one of my old-time sorority sisters, who got it from a friend of hers. I don’t know who wrote it, but it’s on the web at various places.
Let’s take a moment to actually THINK about what this suggests…
1) Who actually believes Americans will completely forgo any purchase just because they don’t buy something on a given day? All this plan will produce is a lot more buying on January 19th or the 21st. No one is going to do without something they want or need in THIS country!
2) Does anyone but an idiot actually believe President Bush is unaware that half this country doesn’t support him and the war in Iraq? Will “Not One Damn Dime Day” (NODDD) prove anything new along those lines?
3) Who is this actually going to HURT? Since the stuff will be purchased sooner or later, the CEOs, the well-healed stockholders, and the rich politicians the Lefties love to hate aren’t going to lose any sleep over this dumb idea! Instead, all the “little people” that liberals claim they support are going to suffer. If eating establishments are near empty, busboys, waiters and bartenders are going to be told to clock out and go home. Wal-Mart, K-Mart, and Target management will do the same to their hourly workers to save money; salaried employees won’t lose a dime. The people who cannot afford it will pay for your ill-conceived protest!
4) Please stop “telling our troops we support them” by hating the war in Iraq! My son fights in this war! Imagine if you had a job that you volunteered to do and everyone said they supported YOU but hated what your company DID! “I support teachers, but I think our children are being taught poorly and schools teach them the wrong things!” “I’m all for our men and women building automobiles, but I think cars and trucks ruin the environment and kill and maim thousands of people every year!” WHAT KIND OF SUPPORT IS THAT? Our soldiers are fighting and dying for America. Their JOB is to kill the bad guys. War is indeed hell. We are trying to defeat a heinous, scumbag enemy who would happily kill you, your children and our grandchildren in the name of Allah. They don’t fight fair; they don’t wear uniforms; they are not going to negotiate a peace plan they will abide by. It will be frustrating coming up with the “right” plan to destroy them. Even the damn Nazis fought like men and followed the principles of the Geneva Convention! You cannot be against everything our military does and “support our troops.” Stop being so naive! Those who give their life or lose their limbs want to know they did so for a just, supported cause.
5) Many of you think because you exercise your right to dissent, you’re a much better patriot than those of us who support our President and our government. Guess again. I support your right to disagree, and our troops are fighting to ensure it. It is time YOU honored my choice to want dead terrorists and to detest any movement trying to destroy the freedoms the USA promotes and defends. I don’t agree with everything ANY politician promotes, believe me! If you blindly follow the Democrat-of-the-Day or a moronic plan like NODDD just because you hate Bush, you are part of the problem, not any solution.
To summarize, you are NOT supporting our troops, you are NOT supporting our cause, you are NOT supporting our country, and you are NOT hurting anyone “in their revenue accounts” (except the poor people). “Not One Damn Dime Day” is just plain stupid.
Well, H Boroni, I guess it all depends on where you’re coming from and what you’ve learned along the way.
1. The NODD Day is a protest statement, meant to call attention to the fact that there are still many, many of us who are enraged by all that the Bush adminstration stands for and has failed to accomplish. Of course not all Americans will join the effort. Not all Americans marched in Washington at various times regarding the Gulf War or the Vietnam war of a woman’s right to choose. But the point was made by those of us who did. You’re missing the point.
2. The protest is as much to remind people like you as it is to remind the Bushies that half of America does not agree with you all. It is as much to remind the press and the rest of the world. We know that Bush knows. You’re missing the point.
3. It’s not meant to hurt or help the economy. It’s meant to be a visible and newsworthy protest. You’re missing the point.
4. Notice that I edited out the statement found in other versions of this call to dissent about “supporting the troops.” My support of the troops begins and ends with “bring them home so they don’t get killed.” That’s a whole other issue and doesn’t belong, I don’t think, in the rationale for this dissenting act. That’s my personal point of view.
5. The troops in Iraq are not fighting to protect America. The Iraqis were not the ones who orchestrated and carried out 9/11. The people there hate us and our troops about as much as they hated Saddam. America is more in danger from the actions of Bush than from any actions of the Iraqis.
From my point of view, supporting the current neocon administration is being part of the problem. Urging major governmental overhaul, through protest, dissent, sending emails, writing letters, being intelligently and vocally opposed to the current adminstration, is being part of the solution, part of the impetus for change. You’re missing the point.
To summarize, living in a state of denial, remaining uninformed about the reasons why America is in the mess it’s in, is what is stupid. You’re missing all the points.
H.Boroni:
The point about supporting troops but opposing the war in general is this:
I don’t believe we ever should have gone to war in Iraq the way we did. We sent our soldiers into an impossible situation without enough thought. Our soldiers — YOUR FAMILY — is fighting and dying in a war that didn’t have to happen. I oppose that notion. I oppose the notion that YOUR FAMILY was sent to risk their lives without enough reason, without enough thought. It was rash.
Now that they ARE there, however, while I continue to oppose the war, I support them in their struggle to survive and return home safely. I would think you would appreciate that.
Soldiers are just doing their job by going where they are told to go and fighting who they are told to fight. To condemn them for that is lunacy.
Condemning the insanity of this war, is NOT lunacy, questioning its necessity is not lunacy.
But while I may condemn the war and those who sent our sons, daughters, cousins, brothers, mothers to fight and die, I do not confuse the war with the warriors. Again, I say, I support our troops who were forced into this insane war by wishing them well, and hoping they come home safely to friends and family.
The Silent Majority
“Not one damn dime” gives us a chance to show who is really the Silent Majority.
Anybody know if a “Not one damn dime” web site been started up as of yet? We need one, where we can go for our marching orders on what day of the week to sanction.
If enough people are willing to participate, as soon as the effect on business is felt, we need to keep changing the day of the week we refuse to spend (keep em guessing). This way the managers won’t know which day we have chosen, and they can’t anticipate how many employees need to be on hand for any particular day. (make em sweat) That way, every day would be a day they would have to be thinking about “The Silent Majority”. Isn’t that the whole idea ? To make people aware of our outrage of stolen elections and unwarrented attacks on another soverign nation and the resultant death and destruction.
The Myrtle Beach area of South Carolina is afire with the spreading of “Not one damn dime” day. I have never seen anything like it here.
A young Muslim was once asked why his people would strap dynamite to their bodies and give their own lives to destroy their enemy. “It’s the only weapons we have”, he replied. We have to start using the only weapons we have.
Don’t know about the rest of the country, but we are full speed ahead with this here on The Grand Strand.
This is a GREAT idea! None of the arguments against it hold water. So what if “they” buy more on the day, to counter it? Or if the businesses charge more? Or if some “moms and pops” get pinched a little. Most of them have supported this lunacy, too!
Even the principle of doing it is great. We NEED to flex some muscle. No one is thinking that it’s going to bring red corporate amerika to it’s knees; it’s just a little slap in the fact, to remind them that WE count. WE matter.
Hell, if I was a rock-ribbed conservative, I’d do it.
Le’s get ’em…
There is a website that I just discovered at http://www.notonedamndime.com. You can sign a petition if you want, leave a message etc. I agree that it would be great to get a mass boycott movement going to do it once a month on an irregular schedule. Or even twice a month. I wonder how much money people like us would save just because we wouldn’t be out there “picking up a few things” just about every day.
