never enough Elmo

Since the terry-cloth “Elmo-head” pillow (with detachable arms) — pictured above — that I created was such a hit with my 9-month old grandson, I decided to design and crochet a Baby-Elmo hand puppet.

It came out so good that I’m attempting a Winnie-the-Pooh one.
Retirement, combined with caregiving, leaves lots of time for extreme dillitantism and a need to do something to keep my hands out of the potato chip bag.

  1. CAN YOU PLEASE SHARE YOUR ELMO PUPPET PATTERN? AND ANY OTHER CROCHET ELMO PATTERN OR SESAME STREET YOU MAY HAVE? MY 2 YEAR OLD IS GA-GA FOR ELMO.

  2. I am looking after Great-Grandaughter Keiran who is nuts about Elmo@ Would love your pattern for the Elmo handpuppet.

  3. I feel so bad that I didn’t write down what I did when I made those Elmo things. I just improvised as I went along, never thinking that someone else might like to duplicate what I did.
The Elmo head is just two oval red pieces of fabric with some batting inside. I cut the eyes, mouth, and nose out of washable felt and zig zagged stitched them onto the front before sewing it to the back. The arms are just two “long attached arms” pieces of fabric put together like the pillow.
For the puppet, I just started single crocheting the back, chain stitching enough stitches so that, with a front, it would fit over my hand. I single crocheted until the I wanted arms and then chain stitched on each side for each arm. It was all trial and error. For the head, I increased one stitch each side until the head was as wide as I wanted, did a couple of rows of straight single crochet and then decreased one stitch each side until the head looked right.
I crocheted the facial features and sewed them on, but you can also make them out of washable felt and do the same that you did for the pillow.
Of course, you have to know how to sew and crochet, and you have to be willing to go with the trial and error method.
That’s about all I can tell you, since I made these two things two years ago in 2003.

  4. Good morning. (4/12/06) – My wife and I are finally proud grandparents. My wife crochet a “PO” bear for our Charlie. But it seems that he just can’t get enough of ELMO, toys, noisy things, etc. I was wondering if there was a crochet pattern available for an ELMO doll. I look forward to hearing from you. And thank you for the site.

  5. MY 1 YEAR OLD GRANDSON LOVES ELMO. IT IS ONE OF HIS FIRST WORDS. HE EVEN HAS ELMO ON HIS DIAPERS AND WHEN SOILED HE SAYS ELMO FOR A DIAPER CHANGE! I WOULD LOVE TO MAKE HIM AN AFGHAN WITH ELMO ON IT. DO YOU HAVE SUCH A PATTERN. I AM AN EXPERIENCED IN CROCHET BUT DON’T HAVE THE SKILL OR IMAGINATION FOR CREATING PATTERNS.

    PLEASE RESPOND
    SINCERLY
