TrackBack is a new feature of Movable Type, which at this point only works amongst MT-powered blogs. Let's say you have an MT-powered blog and have upgraded to the new 2.2 version (and have turned on TB and made a new TB-functional "bookmarklet"). You see a post here, say, that you want to talk about on your own blog. You come to the entry (say this one) and click your bookmarklet. The post window popsup, and one of the items is for you to "ping" this entry. What that does is this: When you save YOUR post, YOUR installation of MT sends a "ping" to THIS installation of MT and says, basically, that YOUR blog has referenced an entry on THIS one, and gives some info about it (see my TB on the first of my Mom's post to this blog to see what kind). So then THIS blog will display that info on the referenced entry here, providing a return link (or, TrackBack) to YOUR blog entry about THIS blog entry.

It's a little like a super-referer. And this is just the barebones explanation. As the system scales, and more people use it (and even, to some extent, before it scales and people just start learning what can be done with it) it will become more obvious what sorts of things can be done with it.
